Label Story

The young Arthur became a king because of pulling the sword out of a stone.  However, when he fights with Sir Pellinore, the sword breaks apart because he betrays the spirit of knighthood.  The King Arthur lost the sword follows Merlin’s advice to the side of the lake.  The siren in the lake gives King Arthur a sacred sword named ‘Excaliber’, which is a symbol of a throne, like the sword in a stone.  Excaliber means “breaking steel” in ancient Keltic.

Distillery Introduction

Excalibur is the second edition of King Arthur single cask collection.  Or Sileis consulting group choose the single cask whisky of Laphroaig for this edition.  Laphaoig distillery is by the water, therefore, the quality of water for whisky is exceptionally good.  Laphroaig sherry single cask is always rare, and the combination of Islay peatiness and sherry cask is even rarer and special which corresponds to the rarity of the Excalibur.

Laphroaig distillery is located on the south bay of Islay in Soctland.  The Victorian style distillery building has white walls, and on each wall, there are black-framed windows lining coherently, plus the tower style chimneys.  These all provide different beautiful views in summer and winter.

Alexander Johnsons and Donald Johnsons are brothers, and they established the distillery in 1810, and started the operation in 1815.  Laphroaig was originally a private distillery, and got the license to become a legal distillery in 1826.  Its production is to use heavy peaty soft water, and the peat from Port Ellen to heat the malt.  And the malted barley 70% is purchased from Port Ellen, 15% is from Islay, and the rest 15% is from the floor malting of Laphroaig distillery itself.  All the malt will mix together to produce whisky.  The result is the whisky is super smoky and peaty.  In addition, it has obvious flavors of iodine, sea grass and salt underneath.  Laphroaig whisky is recognized as the most classic Islay single malt whisky.

Nobody knows the whole history of Laphroaig, but every Islay whisky lovers are familiar with some of the anecdotes.  For example, Donald, one of the founders, accidentally fell into a hot burnt ale, and died.  The distillery terminated the contract with wholesalers in 1877, and ended up having law suits.  USA started Prohibition in 1920, and Laphroaig whisky changed its name to a medicinal liquor, and imported to America successfully.  The owner of the distillery Ian Hunter passed away in 1954, and his secretary Elisabeth Bessie inherited the distillery.  The Prince of Wales, who is also one of the biggest fans of Laphroaig, visited the distillery in 1994.  His gift to the distillery was an armorial.  Since then, each bottle of Laphroaig whisky has the armorial on the label.
