Distillery Introduction

“Caliburn” is the origin of the King Arthur legend and the very first single cask of this range. The consultants of Or Sileis choose Ben Nevis as the first edition of this range due to its related background to the story of Caliburn.  Ben Nevis distillery was built by a farmer named Long John MacDonald in 1825.  It is located on the northwest hill of Ben Nevis Mountain, and named after this highest mountain in Scotland.  When Queen Victoria was having a trip to Scotland in 1848, her 6-year-old son, Edward VII, was with her to visit the distillery.  The founder delivered a cask of whisky to Buckingham Palace as a gift afterwards.  This cask later became the celebration of Edward VII 21st birthday.

The founder passed away in 1856, and his son, Donald P. MacDonald inherited the distillery.  Later it was sold to the Canadian entrepreneur Joseph W. Hobbs in 1941, and sold back to the original owner, the MacDonald family in 1981.  However, the MacDonald family was unable to resist the recession of Scotch in the 80s, and sold the distillery to the Japanese spirit maker, Nikka in 1989.  Now, 20% of Ben Nevis annual new make production goes to Japan.  Whether the owner of the distillery is Scottish, Canadian or Japanese, Ben Nevis whisky has always maintained high quality.  The water source of the distillery comes from the rain and snow of the top of Ben Nevis mountain.  It permeates into the mountain which constructs from peat and granite, and converges toward the neighborhood of the distillery.  The water is pure and full of local characteristics.  It makes Ben Nevis whisky has the local authenticity, which corresponds to the significance of the story of Caliburn.

Ben Nevis is led by the Keeper of the Quaich, Colin Ross, who is devoted himself to maintain the history, culture and craftsmanship of Ben Nevis whisky, which is the first owner of whisky production license.
